Neeraj Sonalkar is a joint director of VentureStudio-Center for Innovative Business Design, Ahmedabad University, Gujarat-India. As a PhD Candidate at the Center for Design Research at Stanford University, he is currently studying moment-to-moment concept-creation through interpersonal interactions between engineers. His other interests include designing innovation ecosystems in developing countries, understanding capital flow mechanisms, and studying and practicing improvisation. Neeraj is a big fan of being in the moment and loves to capture a moment with his camera.
Neeraj spent his childhood and early youth in Mumbai developing a knack for tinkering with objects, drawing and creating play narratives. After dabbling with electronics in junior college, Neeraj opted for a mechanical engineering degree from Mumbai University. This was followed by a brief exploration of the software world at Infosys Technologies and a dip into product design and manufacturing with a design firm in Mumbai. Urged by a desire to carry his explorations further into new territories, Neeraj came to Stanford and jumped right into design research. Design research with a broad aim to understand how engineers and designers create the new, afforded Neeraj an ideal springboard to delve into human behavior and re-discover himself from a variety of perspectives – engineering design, cognitive psychology, neuroscience, theater, dance, team dynamics and business. He hopes to continue designing his own self and remains an incorrigible explorer.
